Cancer Care
The outstanding Oncology team at the Comprehensive Cancer Center at JFK Medical Center works closely with each patient – from diagnosis through post-treatment – to answer every question and ensure the best possible experience during what can be a difficult time.
Oncology is defined as the study and treatment of cancer and tumors. To diagnose patients with possible cancerous illnesses, Oncologists perform tests, such as a biopsy, Beta- HCG, CT scanning or MRI scanning. Once a patient has been properly diagnosed, Oncologists use chemotherapy, radiation or other medicines, and perform any number of procedures including mastectomy, colonoscopy, radiotherapy, bone marrow transplantation (BMT), hormone manipulation, and other procedures.
Treatments
In our state-of-the-art facility, our dedicated Oncologists and Oncology staff use the most current treatments and technology to treat cancer. Treatments include:
- Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is high-precision radiotherapy that uses computer-controlled linear accelerators to provide specific radiation doses to a malignant tumor or areas within the tumor. - Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)
Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) uses images during a course of radiation therapy to improve the precision and accuracy of the delivery of treatment. - High Dose Radiation (HDR) Brachytherapy
High-Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy is internal radiation therapy that uses high doses of radiation from implants placed near or inside the tumor(s). This allows a maximum radiation dose, while minimizing radiation exposure to the healthy tissue surrounding the tumor.
Our Oncology surgeons are also using the CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System – the most advanced radiation therapy on the market. This non-invasive system provides an alternative to surgery for the treatment of both cancerous and non-cancerous tumors.
