The Lung Institute at JFK Medical Center provides individuals with chronic respiratory problems an array of highly effective programs in pulmonary diagnostics, pulmonary rehabilitation, and smoking cessation.

Pulmonary Care Specialists

Our outstanding team of pulmonary care specialists is prepared to deliver one-on-one education, training and support for a host of proven respiratory interventions and techniques. Board-certified pulmonologists from JFK Medical Center's Pulmonary Department oversee this advanced level of care. The multidisciplinary approach includes cardiac and thoracic surgery, respiratory therapy, pulmonology, nutrition and radiology. Respiratory therapists also play a vital role in patient care and education. These highly trained professionals hold Advanced Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support and Neonatal Advanced Life Support certifications.

Pulmonary Diagnostics

Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) and cardiopulmonary stress tests are routinely administered as part of our Pulmonary Diagnostics Program. PFTs are often given to patients with chronic problems like asthma and emphysema to determine the condition of their lungs. Methacholine challenge tests assess or exclude the severity and degree of asthma. Cardiopulmonary stress tests will help distinguish between a cardiac or pulmonary problem. A pulmonary therapist will guide you through the test and a pulmonologist will interpret the results.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation

This aggressive program is designed specifically for patients whose daily activities are impacted by shortness of breath and/or lung disease. Led by a pulmonary rehabilitation specialist from The Lung Institute, pulmonary rehabilitation consists of one-hour sessions over the course of several weeks. You'll receive education and training in key areas, such as breathing and relaxation techniques, nutrition, infection control, energy conservation and proper use of home equipment and medication. A carefully supervised exercise curriculum also may be recommended that includes strength, diaphragmatic and endurance training.

Tobacco Treatment

The Lung Institute's Tobacco Treatment Program has helped countless individuals rid themselves of addictive and lethal tobacco use. Leading the program are respiratory therapists with expertise in tobacco dependency and the ability to connect with you on a personal level. As part of this program, you'll be given an individual treatment plan that may include FDA-approved nicotine replacement therapy. Our comprehensive program includes behavioral modification, stress management, nutrition evaluation, all necessary testing and screenings and referrals to outpatient wellness programs. You'll be empowered with the knowledge, self-awareness, support and resources that encompass a lifestyle free from smoking.
