Intensivist Program

JFK Medical Center has developed an intensivist program for all of its 55-bed intensive care unit. JFK Medical Center is the first hospital in the area to utilize intensivists – physicians who specialize in caring for critically ill patients in the Medical Center's critical care unit. Intensivists coordinate the care provided by nurses, respiratory therapists and others as needed by the patient.

Intensivists provide continuous clinical assessment and are able to address subtle changes in clinical conditions early. When clinical problems do arise, one of the intensivists is immediately available to intervene.

Having intensivists – medical specialists with sub-specialty training in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine – on staff results in increased survival, reduced ICU stays, fewer clinical and procedural complications and improved patient and staff satisfaction, according to Washington, D.C. based The Leapfrog Group, a consortium of Fortune 500 companies and other large health care purchasers. Intensivists reduce ICU mortality by 40 percent and less than 10 percent of U.S. hospitals have such full-time on-site coverage according to Leapfrog data.
