The Heart & Vascular Institute
Founded more than 25 years ago, the Heart &
Vascular Institute at JFK Medical Center boasts high
volumes and superb outcomes. JFK has earned the
designation of an accredited Chest Pain Center with
PCI from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care.
The cardiac surgery team has performed more than
12,000 open heart surgeries and our
electrophysiology lab (EP) is one of the busiest
facilities of its kind in the southeastern United
States. JFK Medical Center has the highest volumes
in Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast in
coronary bypass surgery, cardiac catheterization,
defibrillator implants and pacemaker insertion.
JFK Medical Center is the first heart program in
Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast to offer
transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR). Due
to its curative nature, the TAVR procedure
represents a major advance for patients who are
not surgical candidates. The TAVR procedure is
performed by cardiologists and cardiac surgeons
in a hybrid operating suite that combines cardiac
catheterization equipment with the amenities of
a full-service operating room. This new way of
performing heart valve replacement enables the
placement of a collapsible aortic heart valve into
the body via a catheter that is threaded up to the
heart. Since there is no open surgery, recovery
is typically only one to three days in the hospital.
Robotic Surgery
Robotic surgery allows physicians to perform many
surgical procedures through 1-2 cm incisions. For
most patients, a minimally invasive approach offers
substantially less pain, less blood loss and a much
shorter recovery. Other advantages include minimal
scarring, less risk of infection, shorter hospital
stays and faster returns to everyday activities.
JFK Medical Center is joining surgeons worldwide
in the use of the da Vinci
®
Surgical System for more
minimally invasive procedures. This less-invasive
technique uses small incisions and allows surgeons
to operate with greater precision and control. The
robotically trained surgeons at JFK Medical Center
are recognized as pioneers and often host visiting
surgeons from all over the country to observe their
robotic cases. At JFK, surgeons are utilizing robotic
surgery for urology, gynecology, and bariatrics and
leading the way in Palm Beach County in general
surgery procedures.

TrueBeam Therapy, allows us to offer our patients
more treatment options in one-third the time with
a greater degree of accuracy.
Our surgeons are also using the CyberKnife
®
Robotic
Radiosurgery System, which is the most advanced
radiation therapy on the market and provides an
alternative to surgery for the treatment of both
cancerous and non-cancerous tumors.
