Weight loss surgery procedures
Our bariatric surgeons provide several options for surgical weight loss in Palm Beach County. Surgical weight loss procedures work through restriction, malabsorption or a combination of the two. Our experienced staff will advise you about the procedure that is best for your individual situation.
Laparoscopic vertical sleeve gastrectomy, also called gastric sleeve, is a procedure where the bariatric surgeon removes approximately two-thirds of the stomach, resulting in a quicker sense of fullness and a decrease in appetite. It shapes the stomach into a “tube” or “sleeve” and can also be used as a first stage operation prior to a gastric bypass.
Patients receiving a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy have the potential to lose 50 to 60 percent of their excess body weight, generally over the period of a year and a half.
Gastric banding, usually done laparoscopically, is a less invasive procedure and may require frequent office visits to maintain the band tightness level. During this procedure, surgeons place an inflatable silicone band around the upper stomach to create a new, tiny pouch that will limit the amount of food that can be consumed, slowing its progression into the stomach and intestines.
The patient feels full sooner and is satisfied with smaller amounts of food, ultimately losing up to 40 percent of his or her excess weight over a three year period. This procedure is usually done on an outpatient basis and normal activities can be resumed in one week.
Gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y gastric bypass)
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RGB) is the most common gastric bypass procedure, where a small (30 milliliters) stomach pouch is created by separating it from the rest of the stomach. Then, a section of the small intestine is attached to the new pouch, allowing food to bypass the first portion of the small intestine and reducing calorie and nutrient absorption. The limited quantity of food, combined with reduced absorption of calories, results in faster and perhaps more pronounced weight loss than is normally achieved by the gastric banding or sleeve procedures.
Gastric bypass procedures usually require a two or three day hospital stay and normal activities can be resumed in four to five weeks.
Revisional bariatric surgery
Bariatric surgery is very successful as a long-term treatment for morbid obesity. However, on some occasions, patients can experience weight regain or other anatomic problems from previous bariatric surgery. Revisional bariatric surgery can be very complex and requires an individual approach. Our surgeons will investigate the cause for weight regain and the need for revision and tailor a plan to fit each individual patient.
Postoperative patient support
Our postoperative care focuses on healthy lifestyle changes and providing the support required during your weight loss journey. In addition to seeing a nutritionist and psychologist at each postoperative visit, we offer monthly support groups where you can find guidance and peer support. Exercise therapy is also available.
Patient financial and insurance information
Our staff is experienced and able to provide guidance regarding insurance benefits, coverage criteria and authorizations for bariatric procedures.
In an effort to make bariatric surgery accessible to our patients, we offer affordable self-pay pricing for individuals who do not qualify for coverage from their health insurance plans. Please inquire for more information.
